Visibility on Pinterest

Most of you know that during this period of "house arrest"  I have become a Pinterest junkie.  My physical activities are still severely limited.  So Pinterest is like fantasy shopping.  I do find great outfit inspiration and wear them even if I'm home alone all day.

One thing that I've noticed is that I'm seeing more and more photos of "curvy" women and that gives me hope that our attitudes are changing.  What concerns me is that they are still in the 20 year old range.   Occasionally I see pins of  a beautiful 50+ movie star.  Sometimes that's just as bad as trying to be inspired by a painfully thin teenager.  I'm pondering.  Why am I not seeing more over 40/50 yr old normal women out there showing us their style?   Any of us that blog knows there is a great fashion void to fill in that age group.   We call on designers and retailers to fill that need when all along we have had the ability to up our game and do it ourselves.

My proposition is for all of us to make a concerted effort to pin ourselves and each other.  I'm not exactly sure how the Pinterest algorithm works but I think if they start seeing some numbers maybe our photos will start showing up.  We have all talked about visibility or the lack of it when one is lucky enough to enter this phase of life.   I think it's time we took control.

So I say pin away.  If you find another blogger and like her style or outfit Pin it.  Then take it a step further and show that inspiration photo on your blog post.  We all know the link back rules so play nice and give credit where credit is due.

This would also be a great way to draw traffic to your blog.  I wrote this post yesterday but didn't get around to editing it until today (you all know how busy I am)!.  This morning I got an email from IFB that talks about this very topic.  You can read it here.

Do any of you think this is a good idea?  Would you be willing to go along with me to get our message out there?  Let me know.  Maybe we can start something that will make a difference to "invisible" women everywhere or at least in our little corner of the world.

Today I wore a Pinterest inspired outfit consisting of a  turtle neck over a turned up button down.  I went with a sleeveless blouse to reduce bulk.  I'm not sure if the denim skirt will make it out of the house or if I'll change into jeans.  With boots and fleece lined leggings I think I might be warm enough but we'll seeeeeeeeeee!!
All of the clothing worn has been thrifted.  I would say total under $10.00.

Today is the first time I've been able to use my camera in over 4 months.  Oh, how I missed it!  Now I just need to retrain myself!

Have a good weekend!!  Let me know what you think about what I ranted about today.

    1. There is a Pinterest app for iPad, but I haven't figured out how to pin something unless it already has a pin button or is already on Pinterest.

  2. First, you look GREAT! What a cute cute outfit!
I created Pinterest while back, but only recently been playing with it. It's addictive. I do pin some of my stuff but it feels funny pinning your own outfits. You're right tho...not many mature fashion pins to choose from.

  3. Hi Tammy, I have already actively started use Pinterest. My board of hairstyle for women over 40 is very popular (http://pinterest.com/40plusstyle/hairstyles-for-women-over-40/) and I have also created a board especially for women over 40 (http://pinterest.com/40plusstyle/fashion-over-40/) that I'm planning to pin more too. I have sent you an invitation to pin to board as well! Pinterest is a very effective way to reach a larger audience for sure!

  4. This is a great idea! I love viewing pins of other women's styles, but some of the younger women's fashion pins feature skirt lenghts that are just way to short for a 42 year old mom to wear. It would be wonderful to have more women close to my age showcasing their wonderful style!

  8. I saw your pins and it got me to thinking. I am really glad you wrote a post on it. I was unsure as to whether or not people would see it as blatant self promotion, but I am game if y'all are. I think I will create a board for just over 40 style.

  11. See? Smart and stylin' all at once, our Tammy. Looking very together and sporty-warm. Really, you've made a good point and given us a great idea. I've not started pinning as I waited forever for them to respond to my request for an invite, and eventually decided that if they didn't invite, then pooh on them. I agree that our mature and sophisticated fashion presence should be promoted whenever possible.
Happy, happy 2013, dear Tammy. Thanks for all the inspiration!

  12. You look great, Tammy. Some good ideas about Pinterest. I occasionally Pin one of my blog outfits to a board, but it's not labeled to draw attention to over 40's etc. I need to make an effort to seek out more Pins for my age group. I'm usually just a random searching or for a particular style...but it would be nice to support women of our age out there.

  14. You raise a good point Tammy! I pin all kinds of stuff and people (I pinned you in your double-belt outfit a little while ago). One of my goals for this weekend or next is to clean up my boards and get a pinterest link onto my blog - so we'll have to follow each other!
